Gypsy Songs Op.55

Quite unlike the work Alina Ibragimova plays in her solo
concert, Berio’s Folk Songs are unusual and very
atmospheric arrangements of eleven really beautiful folk
songs from around the world. They are sung by Anna
Huntley and she is supported by seven instrumentalists .The only piece we could find to play that fitted that particular orchestration was a piece by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies based on an old Scottish tune, My Lady Lothian’s Lilt,(Lis Dooner can’t wait to get out her bass flute), and the rest of the programme is drawn from works that are derived from folk music from far and wide and played as solos, duos or small ensembles with and without the voice. It will be an evening awash with glorious melodies and will surely be a tremendous evening’s entertainment.

This is the first time we have brought together so many
players to make up a programme of our own devising and
covering so many musical styles – exciting for us and, we
hope, for our audience. The performers are all very fine
chamber and orchestral players and include Steve Tees,
Lis Dooner and Helen MacLeod who gave us a wonderful
harp trio concert in February.  Anna Huntley, who is currently performing at Engliss National Opera, gave a superb recital at Paxton last year which showed her versatility and great stage presence especially in her comic timing. She is being mentored by Angelika Kirchschlager.

A superbly placed sense of drama from Huntley, while never losing a sense of sponteneity ... she was right under the skin of the character in Schumann's evergreen Frauenliebe und Leben, using her endlessly pliable voice to maximum effect.

Anna Huntely’s Irene, portrayed by the young mezzo soprano is outrageously funny and at the same time deeply moving and utterly human.
